Is Someone Watching You?

PINOCCHIO

[pi-noh-kee-oh]

noun

1. the hero of Carlo Collodi’s children’s story, The Adventures of Pinocchio (1883), a wooden puppet who comes to life as a boy and whose nose grows longer whenever he tells a lie.

Nobody likes to be watched all the time.  Some people enjoy it for moments at a time, but not 24/7.  The thought of someone looking over your shoulder every moment of every day would drive anyone crazy.  The lack of privacy would make you feel like an animal.

No one wants to think that their every word is being recorded, and that every  movement is being interpreted, but what if they were?  Even though you’d be free, you’d feel as though you had no real control over your life.  Who wants to live under the scrutiny of strangers and their judgement?  You would constantly be in a position to second guess yourself.  Should I do this or should I do that?  How will the people watching view me?  Are they going to use this against me?  The biggest question that would plague you is why?  Why are they watching me, what do they want? Why won’t they just leave me alone?

How long would it be before you broke down?  A month, maybe a week or a day.  After a while you probably wouldn’t care anymore, and perhaps you would feel as though the cameras weren’t there.  Maybe you would become more of your real self because you realize you don’t care to keep up an image that you feel someone else wants you to portray.  Maybe once you realized that, they would stop watching you…because maybe then they’d realize they can’t control you.  Maybe they would cut their ties to you, and there would be no more strings to manipulate you.  You wouldn’t be their puppet anymore…

…maybe you’d be free.
